In 2008, one of my hockey buddies invited us over to skate on his backyard rink. Bob Nelson had an awesome backyard rink set up. His rink was 64' x 32' and it took up his entire backyard! It had lights, painted boards, goals, etc... The kids had a blast & they skated until they dropped. Everyone was firing questions at Bob about the cost, time, energy, etc...

Twelve years ago my wife and I bought a house in North Haven Connecticut, USA.
Growing up playing pond hockey and football in the park I always Had a love for the outdoors and the fun it had brought me.
I,like every man has plans for making his castle into his playground. Unfortunately my wife and two daughters to follow had other ideas,we only lived on a quarter acre lot anyway, so any thoughts I had of replicating Boston Garden were lost.

I have always loved to skate and play hockey ever since I was tossed onto a sheet of lake ice, wearing a pair of double-runners,by my dad way back when I was about 5 years old. I was hooked!
And sure enough the saying from the movie, "Field of Dreams", "If you build it, they will come" became reality.

We had a backyard rink when I was growing up. I was fortunate enough to have a father who really knew how to make it work. He is a self employed contractor who does a little bit of everything, and takes a lot of pride in his work, as he did with our rink.

This past weekend, Jan 2010, we had a January thaw here in Central New York, just north of Syracuse. I bought a 20x40 ft tarp, and built a frame with cheap 8 inch x 1 inch boards.

I built my first backyard rink this past weekend. My father and I cut the wood and built a 30' by 40' rink and lined it with a 6mil poly clear tarp and have been waiting for the cold ever since.
